Creating a Memoir for My Grandchildren – Part I

Mom & Me 1951

Mom & Me 1951

I was born in Claremont, in Sullivan County, New Hampshire on the 29th day of June in 1951 at the same hospital where my father was born 22 years earlier. I still have the original birth certificate given to my parents from the hospital. I was named Candyce Lynne Wright, my mother being infatuated with Candace Bergen. My father’s name is Richard Leland Wright. Mom’s name is Kathleen Helen Jackson Wright. I was the first of six children born to them, and a girl!

We lived on Spencer Street in Lebanon in Grafton County, New Hampshire while my dad attended Dartmouth College. Dad was in the Navy ROTC and had his duty to fulfill after graduation. I believe that while dad was in the Navy, the first place we lived after that was Exeter with my paternal grandparents. Mom and I stayed there while dad was aboard ship. Eighteen months after I was born my sister, Karen Jo, was born at the Naval hospital in Kittery, Maine. Her middle name is the feminine version of dad’s friend Joe.

Over the next twelve years the number of my siblings grew. Those born after Karen were:
Richard Leland Wright, Jr
Kimberly Kay Wright
Karalee Joy Wright, who we all called ‘Kelly’ and
Christopher Allen Wright. Christopher’s middle name was given to him in honor of my dad’s brother Allen.
